History of Grama Panchayat
The historically significant Pothukallu Grama Panchayat, which was once under the administration of Nilambur Kovilakam, was established on 1st October 2000. Situated on the banks of the Chaliyar River, this region is notable for its legends and historical movements such as the Bhoodan Movement. It is believed that the Panchayat got its name from a rock called “Othukallu”, where Brahmins used to recite religious verses in ancient times. This migrant settlement region, blessed with fertile soil and the proximity of forests, is home to indigenous communities including the Malamuthans and Paniyas.
